“Learn to light a candle in the darkest moments of someone’s life. Be the light that helps others see; it is what gives life its deepest significance.” – Roy T. Bennet

Old Books

When you read an old book
You read it with a grain of salt
And weed out the unnecessary
Ancient words and partial faults

You take your time to formulate
Those thoughts that are eternal truths
You skim over, yet appreciate
What life was like then, as a youth

Why, then, do we swallow down
Bitter pills the Bible offers
When none of us follow every law
For who around you wears hair-covers?

And who amongst us, every week
Keeps a holy day, a resting day
Or condemns those who do not
When by God’s commandments we should pay?

My thought is this: when opportuned
Thoughts of hate and justification
Are strewn throughout our churches
In the name of laws so antediluvian

That we ourselves cannot contend
As the most righteous of the earth
As we ourselves are picking and choosing
As we ourselves ken what these statutes are worth

We should, as lovers, as friends, as Christ-followers
Unveil the outdatedness that guides our compasses
And understand and retain the morals of it
While no longer clinging to the Old Testament injustices

“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Matthew 22:36-40

i feel limited by the

instruments i try to play

their sounds are not what i wish to hear

my hands do not itch for frets or keys

they wish to be empty, with ease

so that i can dance

i only want to dance

and sing and not worry about

finger placements

musicians, brothers and friends, make me feel

as though my singing alone accounts for

always making comments about

female musicians – as though it is rare

for a woman to be talented

and so i feel less of a woman for not

desiring to be so

i just want to dance with words

be free in movement, in voice

experiment with falsetto and harmony

explore the reaches of the human instrument

-for this makes me live-

but i do not feel alive

when i am obligated to strive

with wood and metal

such pretty objects

but they hold no fire for me.

Forgotten places I went through

Every end starts something new

Where I am is lost on you

Maybe letters don’t go this far

With the voices in my head

Saying get up when you’re rested

But if I sleep I’d miss the best parts

And you’d miss my face if you were searching

In the shadows I fall too

Nothing left but claims of truth

Withered hands holding steady

On the rails of happy stories

I admit I can’t look away

Mesmerized by wheels of the ancient

In the shadows I fall too

Nothing left but claims of truth

Charm deceits and beauty’s fleet and

I’m wide awake most every night

In the shadows hide the whispers

All about you, not about me

In the shadows I fall  too

Nothing left but claims of truth

Are you certain all is well

Standing in the path of a train?

The truth: I didn’t know

It was you the first moment I came

Years can do a lot

And people are gonna be changed

And fate doesn’t stop

No matter the reason you beg

I left you in peril

Captive of your cowardly mind

If running is all you’ve got

Then be glad I got here in time

To save the disillusioned

Trying to take his own life

But in the end what exactly

Was the freedom you were hoping to find?
